How Google works
To get started
What is this about?
What do I get out of it?
In three minutes you will understand what Google sorts by. And you will record where you stand today — the only way to see in black and white, a few weeks from now, what has improved.
Google shows first the pages that help the searcher most. So your job in this course is not to outsmart Google — it is to become the best answer for your customers.
Put simply, Google checks three things: What is this page about? Does it genuinely help the searcher? And: Can this business be trusted? Every lesson in this course pays into one of these three questions.
For searches like “carpenter dornbirn”, Google additionally shows a map section with three businesses — above the normal results. You do not get there through your website, but through your Google Business Profile (lesson 3) and your reviews (lesson 4).
And nothing works overnight. Your Business Profile often shows an effect after a few weeks. For the website, Google itself says four months to a year — expect three to six months, more in highly competitive sectors. That is no reason to give up, but the reason to start today.
Step 1 of 4
Open a private browser window
This way your own earlier searches influence the result less. On an iPhone: tap the tab icon at the bottom and switch to “Private”. On an Android phone: the three dots at the top right, then “New Incognito tab”. On a computer: the menu at the top right, then “New Incognito window”.
Step 2 of 4
Search like a customer
Type what a customer who does not know you yet would type: your service plus your town — for example “made to measure built-in wardrobe dornbirn”. Not your company name.
Step 3 of 4
Note your position
Where do you appear — in the map section, on page 1, further back, not at all? Write it down.
Step 4 of 4
Repeat twice
The same for two more services. Three searches, three positions, plus the date — that is your starting point.
What it looks like
Example: What a starting point looks like
A joinery in Dornbirn searches “made to measure built-in wardrobe dornbirn”: two competitors stand in the map section, its own website only appears on page 2. Exactly this gap is what the next lessons close — and with the starting point written down, you can prove the progress later.
Watch out
Common mistake: Searching for your own company name — and being satisfied
Whoever types your name already knows you. New customers search for their problem (“heating dripping feldkirch”), not for you. All that counts is whether you appear in those searches.
Your turn
Do this now
Record your starting point — a slip of paper or a note on your phone, it does not matter. You will need these three lines again in eight weeks.
Tip for the impatient: If you like, set up Search Console from lesson 9 right now. It only collects numbers from the day it is set up — the earlier, the sooner you have real data instead of estimates.
“Complete lesson” below ticks off the lesson. Your ticks are saved in this browser and also appear in the final checklist.
